Catholic Medical Association Commends Supreme Court of the United States’ Decision to Overturn Roe v. Wade CMA Thanks Members Who Impacted the Course of History, Pledges to Remain Committed to Defending Life

Philadelphia, PA – June 24, 2022– Catholic Medical Association today commends the Supreme Court of the United States for recognizing the inherit dignity each of us has from the moment of conception and expresses immense gratitude for its decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The announcement of these decisions signals a long-awaited return to consideration of the most innocent and defenseless of American citizens: the unborn child.

“We are filled with gratitude and relief, as Catholics, to know this heinous and medically unfounded law has been overturned. For too long it has influenced people to believe abortion is just—when in fact the truth is the exact opposite,” said Craig Treptow, M.D., CMA President.

The decision of the Justices voting for the majority opinion is evidence of the growing scientific and logical support for the recognition of the unborn as a person.

Dr. Treptow went on to say “As medical professionals, we are satisfied to know that advances in medicine, which clearly indicate life from the moment of conception, have been considered in this decision. I want to thank each of my colleagues in medicine around the country and the world whose research and dedication to their practice helped to make this day possible.”

CMA wishes to recognize our expert members, whose medical insight and unfaltering commitment to the dignity of the human person, have undoubtedly contributed to SCOTUS’ decision.

Chair of the CMA’s Health Care Policy Committee, Tim Millea, M.D., added, “The effort to correct the errors of the Roe v. Wade decision has lasted nearly a half century, but that ongoing effort refused to surrender.  With these decisions, the debate over abortion is now the responsibility of each state, where the CMA and so many other pro-life organizations will continue to work diligently to protect the innocent.”

CMA, which filed an Amicus Brief in this case, remains dedicated to protecting women and mothers and makes itself available as a resource for anyone who may be contemplating abortion or is in need of crisis pregnancy assistance.

“Our members impact the lives of women and mothers across the country daily. From providing excellent care to women in their regular practices and women’s health clinics, serving as medical directors for crisis pregnancy centers, volunteering and financially supporting these facilities, to coordinating local maternity supply drives, and much more, I wish to thank them for their selfless acts of service which ultimately save lives,” added CMA Executive Director Mario Dickerson.

CMA remains on the front lines of this issue federally and on individual state levels, advocating for the right to life at every stage.
