There is no doubt that achieving authentic healthcare reform and strengthening protection under the law for the right to life, respect for conscience, and the right of religious freedom will be more difficult in the days to come.

Bala Cynwyd, PA—The reelection of President Obama is a profound disappointment for many in the Catholic Medical Association, who were hoping for a real change in direction from the last four years. There is no doubt that achieving authentic healthcare reform and strengthening protection under the law for the right to life, respect for conscience, and the right of religious freedom will be more difficult in the days to come.
However, there is much that has not changed, and will not, in the years ahead. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Our Christian calling to witness to our faith with love and to build the kingdom of God has not changed. Moreover, there is much that members of the Catholic Medical Association can and must do to care for the sick and suffering, to support one another, and to strengthen the Church and the medical profession. These tasks must be embraced whether there is progress or regress in politics.
At this critical time in our nation’s history, Catholic Medical Association members should rededicate themselves—to the principles of the Catholic faith, to their vocation to be healers, and to their rights and duties as American citizens.
