Catholic Medical Association Disappointed, Concerned After Colorado Governor Signs Radical Abortion Bill into Law

Philadelphia, PA-April 6, 2022- Catholic Medical Association today condemned action taken in the State of Colorado, where the “Reproductive Health Equity Act” was signed into law.

“We once again find ourselves standing up for the fundamental right to life and defending the innate dignity each of us has from the moment of conception,” said Craig Treptow, M.D., President of CMA.

“The devastating consequences this law will have are countless and we pray for the women and children who are its victims,” added Dr. Treptow.

In summary, the Reproductive Health Equity Act states “…every individual has a fundamental right to use or refuse contraception; every pregnant individual has a fundamental right to continue the pregnancy and give birth or to have an abortion; and a fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus does not have independent or derivative rights under the laws of the state.”

It is the most radical abortion bill the state has ever seen and makes Colorado the latest of 16 states to introduce or pass similarly radical legislation.

In a March 16, 2022 statement, CMA spoke out against the Reproductive Health Equity Act and urged its members in Colorado to do the same.

“The last two years of the COVID-19 pandemic have shown societies across the world to recognize the importance of life and respect the dignity in each of us,” said Michelle Stanford, M.D., CMA Vice President and State Director (Colorado).

Dr. Stanford went to on to say, “This legislation is a direct attack on life and a threat to women and their unborn children.”

CMA remains committed to advocating for the right to life, locally and nationally. Earlier this year CMA endorsed the Ultrasound Informed Consent Act introduced in the U.S. Senate, and remains an active voice as Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health continues to play out in the Supreme Court.
