CMA Joins Lawsuit to Protect New York City Pregnancy Resource Centers

On February 7, 2012, the Catholic Medical Association joined the Law of Life Project in an amicus brief challenging New York City’s attack on pregnancy resource centers (PRCs). In March 2011, New York City enacted a series of requirements forcing pregnancy resource centers to provide notices and referrals to confuse, discourage or deter women from receiving the valuable free care and counsel PRCs offer. These regulations undermined the mission and violated the First Amendment rights of PRCs, as determined in July by the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals.

CMA was joined in the amicus brief by the American Association of Pro-life Obstetricians and Gynecologists and by the Christian Medical Association. These organizations helped to examine the scientific evidence surrounding the links between abortion and future mental and physical health problems, which help to explain why a growing number of states actually require abortion providers to disclose the same information about potential health risks related to induced abortion.
